Year 3 Topics and Curriculum

Welcome to Year 3!

Our main topic this term will be the Stone Age. The children will find out about homes & diet as well as comparing life in the Stone Age with life today. We will also create pictures in the style of cave paintings.

Our first Science topic this term is ‘Animals including humans’. This unit teaches the importance of the right type and amount of nutrition as well as the functions of skeletons and muscles. In the second half term we look at ‘Forces & Magnets’. This unit will teach the children about forces, friction and magnetic attraction. Both units contain practical investigations.

As with other year groups we will be teaching a text to the children – ‘Stone Age Boy’ using the Talk for Writing technique. The children will imitate, innovate and then finally invent independently. This process of writing has proven to be very popular and successful with the children so we are continuing to develop it across the school. As well as using this technique for fiction writing, we will be transferring skills into non-fiction writing when we look at animal fact files in the second half term.

In P.E. the children will be developing their ball skills (inside and outside) and applying these to netball and basketball. We will also be listening to a variety of music as well as preparing for Christmas!! In Art we will aim to improve colour mixing skills as well as develop sketching and drawing techniques.

A new area of learning for Year 3 will be Spanish. The children will have a regular weekly session with Mrs Yeo (HLTA) on a Tuesday afternoon. This is a very practical fun session and introduces the children to Greetings, colours, numbers and food.

Wow! What a busy term!

Please continue to read with your child at home and encourage them to take part in Alien Reading! It really does motivate them if we all get enthused about it with them!

Please can P.E. kits be kept in school during the week so that the children always have it!

Many Thanks for your support
